Extreme Weather and Cruises
How will extreme weather affect your cruise?
In instances of extreme weather (i.e. hurricanes), cruise ships are safe and provide several advantages over stationary, land-based resorts. While the cruise lines are in the business of selling vacations, the safety and security of guests and crew members is always their primary concern. Today's cruise ships feature the most technologically advanced weather forecasting systems. These allow cruise ship officers and company officials to forcast significant weather-related disturbances well in advance and reposition ships to safe waters. Because of their speed and mobility, modern cruise ships merely alter itineraries and/or ports-of-call in instances of threatening weather. In all circumstances, they take extraordinary measures to ensure a safe and fulfilling vacation experience. The purchase of travel insurance, always an important element of any cruise vacation, assumes additional significance in the instance of severe weather. We cannot emphasize enough how important it is to protect your vacation investment with insurance if you plan to sail during hurricane season. If you are unable to go on your cruise for any weather related reason, and you don't have insurance, your money will not be refunded. In the rare instance that a cruise line cancels a cruise, they will generally offer a variety of solutions that allow guests the opportunity to enjoy a future cruise vacation. This may be as simple as postponing the sailing date or offering a credit for a future cruise. |
